EPSRC Doctoral Training Opportunities

To be considered for a place on the scheme in 2025, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are currently in your penultimate or final year of your undergraduate degree
  • You are studying for an undergraduate degree in a Physical Sciences (Astronomy, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Geography, Materials Science and Metallurgy, Mathematics (applied and pure), Physics) or Technology (Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry, Computer Science and Technology) discipline
  • You are on course for a 1st or a 2i. If your transcript shows year-on-year grade progression towards the upper range of a 2:1 or above, we encourage you to apply.
  • You will be available to participate in all elements of the programme throughout the eight weeks during normal working hours (9 am to 5 pm on weekdays)
  • Have, or expect to have, and be able to prove your right to live and work full time in the UK for the duration of the programme. Right to Work checks will be carried out for successful applicants.

The School of the Physical Sciences and the School of Technology aims to widen participation in postgraduate education via the STEM Internship Programme. By using positive action under the Equality Act 2010, where appropriate, we will tackle the underrepresentation of certain groups.

In addition to the above, you must also meet at least one of any of the listed widening participation/underrepresented criteria:

  • have been in receipt of free school meals at secondary school
  • be in the first generation of your family to study at undergraduate level
  • have been a young carer under the age of 18 or have/had caring responsibilities during your undergraduate study (providing unpaid support for a family who has a physical or mental health condition, or substance misuse)
  • have entered university at undergraduate level from a care background or as a Foyer resident
  • be estranged from your parents/guardians
  • be either a single parent, or lone guardian of a young person who is aged under 18 and/or is still in full-time education
  • Mature undergraduate students/ those who would be mature postgraduate students (i.e. aged 21 or over at start of undergraduate study or 25 or over at start of postgraduate study)

Underrepresented Groups identified in both Schools include:

  • Bangladeshi or Bangladeshi British
  • Pakistani or Pakistani British
  • Black - African or African British
  • Black - Caribbean or Caribbean British
  • Any other Black background
  • Mixed or multiple ethnic groups - specifically Mixed White/White British and Black Caribbean/Black Caribbean British
  • Gypsy or Irish Traveller

We encourage applications from female candidates as both the School of the Physical Sciences and the School of Technology lack female representation within some disciplines at postgraduate level, and those who:

  • receive the maximum Maintenance Loan for undergraduate study
  • have refugee status
  • are not studying at a Russell Group university

We will prioritise applicants who have not previously studied at the University of Cambridge.
